One week ago, 15-year-old Hadiya Pendleton was performing with her classmates in the King College Prep marching band at President Barack Obama’s inauguration. She was a drum majorette, twirling a baton and marching around with her friends from Chicago, Illinois. A devoted reader and an honor student at the prestigious high school, Pendleton was walking with some classmates from the volleyball team when they got caught out in the rain. They ran for cover beneath a canopy. That’s when a man ran from an alley, fired shots into the crowd, and jumped into a waiting car to race away. In a week, teenager Hadiya Pendleton went from an honor student to a murder victim.
“I couldn’t ask for a better child,” said Cleo Cowley, Hadiya’s mother. “She didn’t give me any hard time at all. She had a heart of gold.”
Talk about a depressing story. Random violence just can’t be accounted for, I guess, but the weirdest part of this story is the fact that Pendleton was murdered a mile from President Obama’s Chicago mansion. Chicago has a lot of problems, and most of them are worse than simple teacher’s strikes.
