From 2004 until 2007, Veronica Mars was a full-fledged mini-phenomenon. Never popular enough to get huge ratings or on a prominent network enough to get serious critical attention, Veronica Mars still somehow managed to lure in a devoted group of followers who were crushed when The CW ended the show (the show started on UPN, then transferred to The CW when the networks merged). However, everyone’s favorite spunky teenage detective is making a comeback thanks to the magic of Kickstarter. A petition to create a Veronica Mars movie by show creator Rob Thomas raised over $2.5 million on Kickstarter, blowing past the $2 million dollar goal in SIX HOURS.
“My mind is blown. I’ve been fantasizing about this and had to tell myself, ‘Stop it, Rob, you’re being silly. You’re setting yourself up for disappointment,'” Thomas told EW. “And now today has exceeded the wildest pipe dream I let myself entertain. Holy cow. We better make a good movie. These amazing fans have stepped up. We better deliver.”
While that’s not the most successful Kickstarter ever, it’s a huge thrill for Thomas and the show’s star, sloth-loving Kristen Bell, who announced the Kickstarter once they got permission from Warner Brothers to explore movie funding. The show’s fans will take on the bulk of the fundraising, while Warner Brothers Digital Distribution will handle the promotion, marketing, and distribution of the film.
The more funding they get, the better the movie, so head over to Kickstarter and chip in a little for the cause. If you want to see what all the fuss is about (so do I), the show’s three seasons are streaming on The WB’s website.
