When it came out in 2003, Finding Nemo was an immediate hit for Pixar. The film won an Academy Award, grossed nearly $922 million dollars around the world, and made an additional small fortune in marketing tie-ins, like toys and games and clothing and all the stuff that makes a company potential Disney purchase fodder. To say it was successful is an understatement. Unsurprisingly, Disney has announced a sequel to Finding Nemo starring the lovable Dory! Finding Dory will be coming out in 2015, which is awhile away, but it takes a long time for animation to come to life.
“I have waited for this day for a long, long, long, long, long, long time,” said a press release from Dory herself, Ellen DeGeneres. “I’m not mad it took this long. I know the people at Pixar were busy creating Toy Story 16. But the time they took was worth it. The script is fantastic. And it has everything I loved about the first one: It’s got a lot of heart, it’s really funny, and the best part is — it’s got a lot more Dory.”
Finding Dory will be coming out in 2015, which is awhile away, but it takes a long time for animation to come to life. After the lack of success for John Carter, Andrew Stanton will wade into more successful waters once more. He’s a great animation director, so it’ll be nice to see him going back to the field that launched him. While I’m not crazy about Pixar’s new love of sequels–too much Disney influence–it’s not a huge deal provided the sequels are good (like the Toy Story series).
