Netflix has become an original series generator the likes of which the online world doesn’t see. They’ve gotten critical favorites like Orange is the New Black and House of Cards, crowd-pleasers like Arrested Development, and a 5-series maxi-series event with Marvel coming down the pipe, but Netflix isn’t resting on its laurels. Instead, the company is looking to break into the film business. The first Netflix Original movie will be a sequel to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. The film, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon II: The Green Destiny, will be released simultaneously in theaters and via Netflix, giving fans the choice between the IMAX experience and not putting on pants.
“The movie-going experience is evolving quickly and profoundly, and Netflix is unquestionably at the forefront of that movement,” said Weinstein Company co-chairman Harvey Weinstein. “We are tremendously excited to be continuing our great relationship with Netflix and bringing to fans all over the world the latest chapter in this amazing and intriguing story.”
In terms of who is returning for the second Crouching Tiger, not too much is known. Oscar-winner Ang Lee isn’t going to be involved; the new director will be action megastar Woo-ping Yuen. Michelle Yeoh will be returning to the film, resuming the role of Yu Shu Lien. Joining her will be the awesome Donnie Yen and Jason Scott Lee. So long as they bring the beautifully-choreographed martial arts action, this is going to be a good time.
