It’s a defining moment in television history. Passed over for the Tonight Show in favor of Jay Leno despite Johnny Carson’s blessing, David Letterman left NBC and went to blaze new ground, kick-starting a late-night show on CBS. There he made television history, picking a fight with the richest woman in the world and becoming a platform for a variety of weird projects and ideas. Now it’s coming to an end, as is the longest-running late-night show on television. David Letterman will be retired by Thursday morning; his last show is Wednesday night.
The last show of the David Letterman tenure will take place on Wednesday at 11:35PM Eastern time, just like all of Letterman’s other shows since moving to CBS in August 30, 1993. No one’s really sure what kind of guests will be on the show, or what kind of surprises there are in store for Dave; even the man himself claims not to know, due to the tightness of security surrounding what might be the last great late night host retirement. All I know is, the end of David Letterman is the end of an era, and no amount of noteworthy replacement hosts can take things back to the way they used to be.
