It seems like it’s been a long time since anyone has had a reason to talk about the iPad, or tablet computers in general. Sure Microsoft’s Surface made a little noise, but even the iPad 3 didn’t make a lot of noise among the computer world. Faced with flagging sales for the iPad, it’s time to pull out all the stops and do something radical with the form factor. Apple is reportedly working on a dual-app 12-inch iPad to inspire further sales of the tablet platform.
Of course, the ability to run two apps at the same time is a staple of the Microsoft Surface, so it’s only natural that Apple would look at that, see a demand for it, and try to work that way with their tablet plans. This also may have something to do with Apple’s plans to develop a Home Kit app to control Home-enabled devices like thermometers, electric door locks, and that kind of thing. Maybe you’ll also be able to split the iPad screen with half your Internet of Things home and half your Apple Watch display?
To Apple’s credit, they’re going to customize the 12-inch iPad experience, not just port the familiar over to the larger screen. Hopefully, they’ll put a little thought into the variety of screen configurations (1/2, 1/3, etc.) and come up with some sort of clever framing for the dual-app process.
