When it comes to American thoroughbred horse racing, the sport of kings has fallen on hard times. Sure, it still draws big, drunk celebrities to the signature events, like the Kentucky Derby, but aside from that, horse racing isn’t exactly setting the world on fire. However, that might be changing. It’s been 37 years since Affirmed was the last horse to win the Triple Crown, and since then there have been multiple challengers, but no winners. American Pharoah has won the Triple Crown, the hardest prize in sports.
Bob Baffert, American Pharoah’s trainer, has had four other potential winners, and this is the horse that got through it for him and jockey Victor Espinoza. It’s pretty amazing that we had a baseball triple crown winner before we had a horse do it, but now that’s all changed. Will there be another triple crown winner next year? Could be; the triple crown tends to be won in spurts, so this might be a new golden age for American horse racing.
