In the classic movie Groundhog Day, Bill Murray stars as a weatherman forced to relive the same day over and over and over again. He wakes up to Sonny and Cher, gets dressed, and goes out to watch weather-predicting rodent Punxsutawney Phil determine whether or not there’s going to be six more weeks of winter. Every day, he wakes up and lives through the same day. Now, TV viewers in the UK are going to get the same opportunity. Sky has arranged for a Groundhog Day marathon to take place on Groundhog Day.
Make sure you click through on the article at the Independent’s website. That’s a really nice touch of brilliance. Groundhog Day is a great film as well, with a wonderful performance from Murray, a great Stephen Tobolowski role, and lots of good stuff to recommend it. It’s one of the highlights in the late Harold Ramis’s filmography. If you haven’t seen it, it’s worth checking into.
I’m just very surprised that this had to be a UK television network, and not one from the US. Generally it’s the US that’s into gimmicky television marathons, not the more limited television selection in the UK. I’m sure TBS or someone else will arrange to do this next year, if it proves to be successful.
