To paraphrase the Backstreet Boys: Barack’s back, all right! The incumbent president had celebrity supporters from Madonna to Morgan Freeman, but it was his power with normal people (or semi-normal like the Obama haircut kid) that drove him to his greatest victory. After a hard-fought campaign, Barack Obama has won reelection for the office of President of the United States of America over Mitt Romney.
“We are an American family and we rise and fall together as one nation and one people. We know in our hearts that in the United States of America the best is yet to come,” said Obama in his victory speech. “Our economy is recovering. A decade of war is ending. Our long campaign is now over. And whether I earned your vote or not, I have listed to you, I learned from you. Tonight you voted for action, not politics as usual. You elected us to focus on your jobs, not ours. And in the coming weeks and months, I am looking forward to reaching out and working with leaders of both parties.”
The drubbing for Mitt Romney was thorough and complete. Not only did he lose his birth state of Michigan, he also lost the state he was governor of, Massachusetts Paul Ryan, his VP candidate, failed to carry his home state of Wisconsin. That’s the worst showing for any presidential ticket since George McGovern and Sargent Shriver in 1972. All in all, Obama won 303 electoral college votes to 206, with a popular vote win of 50 percent to 48 percent for Obama, and 26 states to Romney’s 24. The state of Florida is still counting votes, because why wouldn’t it?
