I tried really hard to come up with a decent Yakov Smirnoff joke for the title of this article, but like this architectural marvel somewhere deep inside the wilds of Russia, all attempts were abandoned. I also tried to make a John Mellencamp “Little Pink Houses” reference in honor of Indiana’s only rock star, but that didn’t work out either. In honor of these images of a beautiful abandoned Russian house, allow me to make a compromise: a Yakov Smirnoff style joke using John Mellencamp’s name as a pun.
Are you ready?
In America, you have the famous rock and roll star John Cougar Mellencamp. In Soviet Russia, you have work camps where you break rocks and may be eaten by cougars!
Huh?! C’mon! Brilliance! That was great!
Okay, you’re right. It was bad. But hey, at least I tried.
I love wood when used in house construction. Wood paneling, wood furniture, wood floors… whatever you use it in, I just love the look and feel of natural construction materials, especially a nice wood like oak. None of this veneer crap, and no stained pressboard. If it’s not the real thing, then don’t bother faking it.
You can tell this is quality construction because, while the house itself is in disrepair, the woodwork is intact. I’m sure they shot around some of the more obvious flaws, but I don’t see any serious rotting. It’s a gorgeous house and a great example of classic pre Revolution Russian architecture.
