Space-Age Fiberglass Bike, Circa 1960

Posted 4/23/2008 12:19 pm by Ron Hogan

bowden-spacelander-2.jpg

I’ve written before about how much I love the retro-future look when it comes to design.  I want my cars to be gigantic and have fins, I want my robots to look clunky, and I definitely want my bicycles to have headlights (and taillights).  When I win the lottery, I’m going to buy a 1960 Bowden Special Spacelander bicycle.  It’s one of the oldest fiberglass bikes made, and one of the most expensive/rarest bicycles available for purchase, as it was made for one model year and is in pretty high demand amongst collectors.  Check out a killer gallery here.

Could that thing be any cooler?  Perhaps if it had a long metal whip-like antenna on the back with a raccoon tail hanging from it.  Even without that, this is a boss piece of retro transportation.  If I had that bike, I’d have to ride it at night, just so I could use the head and taillights.  I feel incredibly disappointed by the fact that our technology is so plain and utilitarian.  I want more style in my gadgets, and ‘plain’ doesn’t count as a style, Apple iPod Toilet Caddy.

    Morbid Munching in Casket Restaurant

Posted 6/23/2008 9:06 am by Stephanie Sturgis

I’m not a big risk taker in my life.
I try not to tick off the Grim Reaper, keeping him at arm’s length as much as possible.
I’m wondering what the owners and patrons of a new eating establishment in the Ukraine were thinking when they mocked death by building a theme restaurant named Eternity centered around […]

    No Leaks in Umbrella House

Posted 5/30/2008 12:51 pm by Stephanie Sturgis

Pop Fi has brought all sorts of homes to your attention. We’ve had houses made of newspaper, “backpack” additions to condos and houses made from recycled trash. Even dog houses that would make some people jealous.
The latest unusual home is a house made of umbrellas. The structure by Japanese designer Kengo Kuma is comprised of […]

Wacky Packages Stuck on the Coffee Table

Who doesn’t love some gross humor.
Come on, admit it. The lowbrow can still be funny.
We were taught this at an early age thanks to the folks at Topps who produced Wacky Packages stickers.
You remember don’t you. A pack of stickers with parodies of actual products available on the local grocer’s shelves reformed into a panoply […]

Vintage Photos - Pics from the Past

Posted 5/27/2008 11:38 am by Stephanie Sturgis

There’s nothing like looking back at society through the snapshots of the people.
I can spend hours scrolling through vintage photos and wondering how the lives of the people depicted were different from mine or just same as what I go through.
If you enjoyed Tracy’s earlier link to vintage photos here at Pop Fi, you’ll certainly […]

Gamers Can Buckle Up Old School

Posted 5/22/2008 9:35 am by Stephanie Sturgis

I have to admit I’m anxious to get to play with the new Wii Fit.
The stand-on board from Nintendo looks like a real test of balance and, considering I’m not the most graceful, it will be a challenge.
One thing about the Fit, I don’t imagine the big white rectangle will be turned into a […]

There is a new site on these tubes called ManBabies.
I think the picture is self-explanatory where the heads of fathers and their sons are transferred.
    I know. Very odd.

    The Devil’s Playground

Posted 5/08/2008 12:56 am by Ron Hogan

The playground is supposed to be a happy place.  Filled with kids running around, having fun, screaming with laughter and delight as they gambol and cavort about like beasts in the field.  Sure you might get the occasional skinned knee, but mostly the playground is a place for kids to be kids and revel in […]

    Phone Sheep

Posted 5/07/2008 12:22 pm by Stephanie Sturgis

In an age of cell phones, ye olden dial phone with the curly cord is quickly becoming a thing of the past.
So what to do with all those useless coils of cord.
How about creating a flock of sheep that you don’t have to feed, shear or clean up after.
The art was created by Jean Luc […]

Unusual Crate Labels Help Defeat Scurvy

Posted 5/02/2008 10:03 pm by Stephanie Sturgis

As part of the consuming public, I am not impervious to creative advertising.

Yes, I’m a sucker for a funny, creative commercial.
The lightsaber bus stop ads had my attention.
Before television , advertising was glued to the end of a crate, usually containing anything from beets to lemons to oranges.
A collection of crate labels shows how marketers […]

We all know it’s going to happen.  One day or another, someone will invent a vigilante robot or something and the next thing you know the entirety of Planet Earth is a post-apocalyptic wasteland with gunfights in the streets, rioting, and Australian kids throwing boomerangs at people.  It’s a bad scene if you’re unprepared, but […]

“Falling Towers” Actually Supposed to Look Like That

Posted 4/29/2008 6:00 am by Ron Hogan

The Chinese government has launched a building (and demolition) frenzy the likes of which hasn’t been seen since the Works Progress Administration was launched by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1935.  One of the most interesting of the 300 new buildings that are going to be built in Peking’s business district is the so-called Falling Towers, […]

    Japanese Anatomy

In our pop culture saturated world, Grey’s Anatomy is a hugely popular television show featuring McDreamy in its cast.
Prior to the hit TV drama, Gray’s Antomy of the Human Body was a hugely popular book filled with precisely accurate drawings of the human body and all that it entails. The book released in 1918 includes […]
