It’s all over, at least until 2012. Election 2008 has been decided, and Senator Barack Obama of Chicago, Illinois, will be sworn in as the 44th President of the United States of America on January 20, 2009, after a hard-fought victory over Arizona Senator John McCain. After two controversial and close elections in a row, America needed one to be decided on Election Day itself, and we’ve finally gotten that. You can read Barack Obama’s acceptance speech here, and you can read Senator McCain’s beautiful concession speech here.
Obama defeated McCain 333-162 in the Electoral College, with 37 electoral votes from Indiana, North Carolina, and Missouri still unassigned. The magic number to reach the Presidency is 270, so the race is over after two long years of campaigning. As the Onion so amusingly put it, “Black Man Given Nation’s Worst Job.”
Isn’t that the truth? I guess that’s why the job is so coveted by either the insane or the awesome. Still, the free voting rewards were nice, and hopefully next time around there’ll be even more freebies.
