Back in olden times, every picture was a long exposure photograph. That’s why no one ever smiled or looked happy, because while it’s possible to fake smile for a minute or two, smiling for half an hour is impossible. In one of my old family photos, from back in the early 1900s, my various ancestors are gathered together and at their feet is a constant blur. That blur was their dog. These days, that blurring effect is no longer accidental, as photographers turn long-exposure photographs into works of surreal art.
One of my favorite opening credit sequences is from the 1990 remake of Night of the Living Dead. Someone left a camera on overnight, pointing at the night sky, and in a minute the moon’s full track from horizon to apex, then back down again is recorded. It’s simple and beautiful, yet unnerving at the same time.
