One of mankind’s most enduring mysteries is the ancient stone circle known as Stonehenge. One popular theory about its purpose is that it was an ancient burial ground. Now, thanks to the recent discovery of a second stone circle by the Stonehenge Riverside Project, the latest theory on Stonehenge is that it was part of a whole ancient funeral complex. Call it a funeral parlor for ancient Celts.
Stonehenge and the newly-discovered Bluehenge are located just down the River Avon from Durrington Walls, an ancient feasting and celebration location once marked by its own giant stone. Did the last party of dead loved ones start at Durrington and travel downriver to Bluehenge and Stonehenge? There’s strong evidence of that, as Stonehenge is Britain’s largest burial ground.
I used to think that Stonehenge was a place I wanted to go before I died, but now it’s looking like a place I’d be better off going to after I’m dead. Nothing like a good old-fashioned drunken wake!
