Air travel is a lot of fun, but the process of dealing with the airport, waiting in line to get on the plane, getting through airport security, packing, dealing with annoyed travelers, waiting around with no wifi, and all the other stuff that happens before you get on the airplane is kind of a drag. But the flying itself? That part is awesome. When Anthony Toth wants to feel like he’s jetting away to Parts Unknown on the wings of luxury, all he has to do is head out to his Redondo Beach, California, garage, where he’s built himself a replica Pan Am airplane cabin.
The aircraft enthusiast works for United Airlines, which bought Pan American World Airways‘ Pacific division in 1985. That’s allowed him to stock up on thousands of galley items like napkins, stirs, and the like, to provide beverage service for visitors to his airplane/lounge. He’s also spent about $50,000 of his own money to find and restore bits and pieces of the first class cabin of a Pan Am 747 over the course of the last 20 years, and another 5 years to assemble the cabin in its current state.
Toth hopes to turn his labor of love into an aircraft museum, if only because he’d love to get his garage back for parking purposes. Parking for his car, I mean; not parking for an airplane.
