The idea is there. You take a pair of normal workout pants, combine them with the MP3 player of your choice, and then figure out a way to turn the kinetic energy generated by movement (like running or biking) and turn it into actual energy to power the MP3 player. That’s the idea behind the Dancepants Kinetic Music Player, a shortlisted entry in the finals of Designboom’s Green Life competition.
The entry was created by Lithuanian designers Inesa Malafej and Arunas Sukarevicius, and I have to say, it’s genius. It’s guaranteed to keep you moving and shaking your money-maker to the music so long as the good tunes keep coming, but there are some issues. One of them is the question of how you generate the electricity from the leg movements. The other is related to insulating the wires from those of us who tend to sweat heavily. It wouldn’t do to be running along, only to drop dead from electric shock.
