The Moldovan military isn’t very large. There are only about 6500 men in Moldova‘s armed forces, defending a country of about 3.5 million. However, what the Moldovan military lacks in manpower they make up for in breath power. You see, in order to fight off the swine flu that is raging throughout the country, the Defense Ministry’s chief doctor, Col. Sergiu Vasislita, has ordered that all soldiers receive a ration of garlic and onions to be eaten daily. After all, we can’t all get swine flu priority like Santa.
In Moldovan folklore, garlic and onions are felt to boost the immune system. I guess the breath funk becomes so bad it kills the germs before they can make it through the mouth? I’m not sure how it’s supposed to work, but I’m all in favor of garlic-flavored everything. I don’t need a secret Soviet lab report to tell me that garlic-sauteed onions will be delicious.
