Justice is supposed to be blind. That’s the reasoning behind why a St. Petersburg, Florida, judge has ordered the state to pay for a cosmetologist for murder suspect John Ditullio. You see, in prison, he’s acquired a number of neo-Nazi tattoos on his face and neck, and to ensure a fair trial for the 23-year-old accused murderer, those tattoos will have to be covered up. So every day a makeup artist has to come in and air-brush out obscene words, barbed wire, and (of course) a Swastika.
A guy’s got the right to get any dumb tattoo he wants, in my opinion, but I can see why the judge would want these particular ink designs covered up. There’s no way this guy’s getting a fair trial with a big ol’ Swastika stabbed into the side of his neck. Still, at what point do we make the defense start paying for this stuff? The court has to provide a public defender, but isn’t this more like the court providing a free change of clothes and a daily shoe-shine?
