What would you do if you had an overdue library book? I used to know a fellow who worked at Blockbuster Video, and he told me the best way to get out of overdue movie fines, back when they had overdue movie fines. It was always kind of a hassle, and you could only do it a few times, so I never really bothered with it as I never run up more than a few dollars in late fees. However, library books? I think I still owe our library $20. One former Toledo resident recently returned a book he borrowed from the library (without checking it out) 60 years after the fact.
Apparently, the book, which came in a package postmarked Beverly Hills, California, is a biography of Napoleon by Emil Ludwig. As he said in his note with the borrowed book, “Carrying guilt for 60 years is a terrible thing.” That must’ve been an incredibly interesting book to have kept for 60 years; either that or he wasn’t kidding about the guilt!
Still, I notice he didn’t enclose any late fees, so he must not feel that guilty about the whole thing.
