The Japanese have a weird trend that’s taken hold. They call it a maid cafe. In it, the waitresses all dress in elaborate maid costumes. It started in Tokyo’s Akihabara district, and the concept proved so popular it’s spread beyond maids to all sorts of other themed stores, all staffed by lovely young ladies in maid costumes. Eventually, though, the idea transmuted to the butler cafe, and now this. They call it Hibari-kei, a floating cafe where all the waitresses are men in drag.
Interestingly, it’s just a hobby for the men in drag. By day, most of them work in Akihabara’s IT industry, but by night, they’re cross-dressing waiter/waitresses. Either they’re not well-paid in Japanese technology jobs, or these are guys who are really looking for a good excuse to cross-dress. For all I know, they make more on tips at the Maid Cafe than they do in their normal work day!
