When Texas quarterback Colt McCoy went down with an injured right shoulder with 10:45 left in the first quarter, the game was pretty much over for the Longhorns. After all, they were squaring off against the number one football team in the land, the Alabama Crimson Tide, whose quick defenders made the Southeastern Conference miserable all season. They were undefeated, had a Heisman Trophy winner in running back Mark Ingram, and Texas’s backup, Garrett Gilbert, is an 18-year-old freshman who has played basically no football all year. For three quarters, the game was over. Then, in the last quarter, Gilbert came alive and nearly won the game for the Longhorns. However, his inexperience proved costly, and Alabama has taken home the BCS National Championship.
This has been a historic season for Alabama; with the program’s first title in the BCS era (13th title overall). Ingram is the storied Crimson Tide’s first Heisman Trophy winner. Nick Saban is the first coach to win national titles at two different schools since the Great Depression. Still, it took a stirring effort to best Texas, who pulled within 3 points during the fourth quarter and nearly won it all. If Colt McCoy didn’t get hurt, it might be a different story.
