In his tenure at USC, Pete Carroll strung together ten remarkable seasons. He won 97 games, balanced by 19 losses. He took home two national championships, seven Pac-10 titles, and was one of the most successful coaches in college during his tenure in Los Angeles. Now he’s leaving the friendly confines of the University of Southern California, heading to Seattle to take over as the coach of the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks.
Longtime sports fans like myself will remember that this is Carroll’s third go-round as an NFL coach. He spent a season with the New York Jets and three seasons with the New England Patriots. He amassed a respectable 33-31 record as a pro coach, making the playoffs twice. An interesting note: this is Carroll’s return to Seattle; he was the Seahawks defensive backs coach before heading to SoCal.
If Carroll was going to leave LA, this is the time. His Trojans are mired in controversy, in trouble with the NCAA (or should be), and finished a mediocre 9-4; Carroll’s worst season since his first at USC. It remains to be seen just how well he’ll fare in the pros this time around. Hopefully he’s learned a few things.
