One of the interesting facts I mentioned about Pete Carroll taking the Seattle Seahawks job is that Carroll’s last coaching position in the NFL was with the Seahawks. Interestingly enough, Carroll’s right-hand man at USC, Lane Kiffin, is taking over for his former boss. Kiffin, the son of NFL legend Monte Kiffin, is taking the reigns as the top boss of the USC Trojans football program after one year with the Tennessee Volunteers, and he’s not coming alone. Kiffin is bringing most of his Tennessee staff with him, including defensive coordinator/father Monte Kiffin and the best recruiter in college football today, Ed Orgeron (who also coached at USC with Kiffin and Carroll).
For a guy who has never been overly successful (5-15 with the Oakland Raiders in the NFL, 7-6 with the Volunteers in his only season at Rocky Top), he sure is in demand. I imagine that it helps that he’s familiar with the program, knows the area well, and is bringing two of the best assistant coaches in football with him when he returns to Southern California. Maybe he’ll even stick with this job longer than a season!
