Most of the time, the crew of the Baltica might see a seal sunning himself on the ice floes of the Baltic sea during their research trips out into the ocean. Nobody expected to see a dog stranded some 18 miles out to sea! But there was Baltic, a generic mutt, stuck on the ice for over four days after four different failed rescue attempts didn’t stop his journey down the Vistula River. Reuters has video of the miracle rescue!
The hero of this story is sailor Adam Buczynski, who went down in a pontoon (it was too dangerous to move the ship closer) and managed to scoop the dog up in a net and bring him back to the ship. They’ve named the plucky mutt Baltic, and if no one claims him, he’s destined to become the Baltica’s permanent mascot!
