It was one piece of cheese. One simple slice of yellow, square, dairy product, and it was enough to make the local McDonald’s franchise in Lemmer, Netherlands, fire an employee. A co-worker had bought a burger, and then later asked for a slice of cheese. The fired waitress gave it to her, and when word made its way up the ladder, she got canned. After all, the cheeseburger is more expensive than the hamburger, so McDonald’s brass felt she was giving away free food.
The courts thought differently, and awarded the fired waitress $5900, which is the sum of the remainder of her contract with the company. Of course, the difference in cost between a cheeseburger and a hamburger is, what, 10 cents? Is there even a difference anymore? I know it didn’t cost almost $6000, that’s for sure. Mickey D’s is a chain that needs no more bad publicity in Europe.
