It had a good 30 year run, but one of the most famous distributors of independent and critically acclaimed movies, Miramax Films, is being shuttered by parent company Disney. Named for Miriam and Max, the parents of founders Bob and Harvey Weinstein, the studio started out in Buffalo, New York before hitching its star to directors like Kevin Smith and Quentin Tarantino and soaring into the Hollywood stratosphere. Buy stuff here, close stuff there. That’s the way the industry works these days. Miramax had a great run, but when Bob and Harvey left to start The Weinstein Company in 2005 (and took Dimension Films with them), the writing as on the wall for Miramax. The brothers have shown some interest in buying the name of the company back, but good luck getting Disney to give up any trademark they get their claws in.
