The ROUS Named Caplin

Posted 2/09/2010 9:30 am by Ron Hogan

capybara-and-guinea-pig.jpg

Melanie Typaldos has a few hundred pounds of rodent at her home in Buda, Texas, but she won’t need any rat poison.  The rodent she has is actually the family pet.  He’s named Caplin Rous, and he’s a 2-foot-tall, 200-pound rodent from South America called a capybara, and he might be the most popular capybara on the Internet thanks to his blog and Facebook account.   He originally came to the Typaldos household about 2.5 years ago, and he’s been the pet of the Typaldos family since he was 11 days old.

When I was in college, I lived with a South American for awhile.  One day, he was talking about something, and I brought up the capybara.  He explained to me that it was just like a giant water rat, and tried to dissuade my efforts to get him to sneak me back one as a pet by explaining that they’re vicious and tend to bite.  I kind of think he was pulling my leg, because Caplin looks as cuddly as you please.

Art On The Head Of A Pencil

Posted 7/30/2010 10:00 am by Ron Hogan

There’s just something about pencils that make them perfect for art.  The graphite is soft and easily manipulated, making pencils awesome for drawing and shading traditional sketches, but for some reason, pencils also lend themselves to nontraditional forms of art, too.  Like, for example, the weird and creepy pencil faces or, in this instance, the [...]

Drew Carey Drops 80lbs. After Getting Sick Of Being Fat

Posted 7/30/2010 9:30 am by Ron Hogan

Drew Carey is known for a few signature things.  He’s got those black horn-rimmed glasses.  He’s got a flat-top.  He makes Cleveland jokes.  And, oh yeah, he’s a bit on the pudgy side.  Well, he was a bit on the pudgy side, but thanks to a change in dieting habits and a serious exercise regiment, [...]

Flying Manta Rays

Posted 7/29/2010 10:00 am by Ron Hogan

It’s one of the most unusual mating behaviors ever caught on film.  Giant manta rays, which can weigh several tons when fully-grown, have been caught leaping up to 10 feet out of the water and flapping their fins in an attempt to glide in order to attract a mate.  Apparently, the big air and massive [...]

Snake Found In Washing Machine

Posted 7/28/2010 10:30 am by Ron Hogan

As a mother of two boys, Wendy Foley is used to doing laundry.  Lots of laundry.  So, when she went to the washing machine and saw what she thought was a snake, she dismissed it as some kind of kids’ toy or a prank or something.  After all, the laundry had been going and the [...]

Rare Zedonk Born In Georgia

Posted 7/28/2010 8:00 am by Ron Hogan

It’s not a combination that is normally seen, but it’s happened enough to get a name.  When a zebra father has a baby with a donkey mother, the end result is what is called a zedonk.  It only happens in wildlife preserves, which makes it very rare, so the zedonk baby born in captivity at [...]

World’s First Full Face Transplant Performed

Posted 7/27/2010 9:00 am by Ron Hogan

Face transplants were once thought to be science fiction, or the purview of goofy action movies like the Nicolas Cage/John Travolta classic cheeseball Face/Off, but not anymore.  After dozens of individual surgeries and months of recovery, Oscar, a 31-year-old Spanish man, debuted his new face at a press conference in Madrid’s Vall d’Hebron Hospital.  He’s [...]

Beautiful, Crumbling Lynnewood Hall

Posted 7/27/2010 7:30 am by Ron Hogan

I’ve been doing a whole lot of real estate browsing lately.  I’m in the process of looking for a home, and as such, I’ve been going to every opening in what I believe to be in my price range, and getting packet after packet of information from helpful realtors in the process.  I’m in full-fledged [...]

Lady Bandit’s Panty Mask Unsuccessful

Posted 7/23/2010 7:30 am by Ron Hogan

Some disguises are just perfect.  They cover your entire face, disguise your general shape, and make you really tough to identify.  Then, there are all the other disguises that just don’t seem to work.  While I thought the Sharpie face masks were bad, they’ve got nothing on the underwear bandit.  Sharon Lain, a 51-year-old woman [...]

Ralph Mothes and Paloma Werner are experienced sailors.  They’re both members of the Cape Town Sailing Academy and routinely take their yacht out to sea to take in the sights, get a little fresh air, and if they’re lucky, see a whale or two.  Unfortunately for the two of them, a whale got a little [...]

Scientists Discover Super-Sized Star

Posted 7/22/2010 6:30 am by Ron Hogan

How do you discover the largest star ever discovered?  Not a big star, but a star so big that you have to invent a class for it?  Well, when Paul Crowther discovered the hypergiant star R136a1, he used a Very Large Telescope.  That’s the official name for the device, which Crowther and colleagues from the [...]

Rare Horton Plains Slender Loris Discovered

Posted 7/20/2010 7:00 am by Ron Hogan

After 63 years with no sightings, it’s fairly safe to assume that a species might be extinct.  Surely the Horton Plains slender loris, one of the rare species to inhabit Sri Lanka’s dense jungles, would’ve been seen sometime between 1939 and now if it was still alive.  As it turns out, the species isn’t extinct, [...]

Autobahn Closed Due To Massive Party

Posted 7/19/2010 7:30 am by Ron Hogan

Germany’s Autobahn, or A40 to the locals, is one of the most famous roads in the world.  After all, there’s no speed limit, so drivers can drive as  fast as they want.  Hence its fame; who doesn’t want to put the pedal to the metal and roar down the highway?  Interestingly, the Autobahn was in [...]

Devil-Horned Crook Arrested

While Jesse Thornhill doesn’t have an arrest record as long as his arm, he does have a list of what the police have dubbed “personal oddities” as long as his arm, including silicone devil horns stuck under his skin, metal studs implanted into his face, brands on his body, tattooed-on facial hair (eyebrows), and of [...]

The Large Hadron Collider Comic Book

Posted 7/16/2010 7:30 am by Ron Hogan

It’s a pretty standard comic book trope.  There’s a super-intelligent scientist, like a Dr. Reed Richards or a Dr. Bruce Banner.  Some accident, or exposure to some weird new radiation, gives him super powers a-la the Fantastic Four or The Incredible Hulk.  Hijinks ensue.  “Con-CERN-ed,” a new digital comic book from Dark Horse, puts a [...]
