This weekend, Valentine’s Day is coming. If you haven’t bought your sweetie something nice yet, you’re running out of time. Unless, of course, you’ve been banned from celebrating Valentines Day by your school. That’s the issue in Weston-Super-Mare, Somerset, where the staff at Ashcombe Primary School have banned the celebration of Valentine’s Day for their young pupils. Apparently the whole thing was just a big distraction to the kids.
Says headmaster Peter Turner, “We do not wish to see any Valentine’s Day cards in school this year. Some children and parents encourage a lot of talk about boyfriends and girlfriends. We believe that such ideas should wait until children are mature enough emotionally and socially to understand the commitment involved in having or being a boyfriend or girlfriend.”
Any Valentine’s Day cards found in the school will be confiscated by officials, but the school kids will be allowed to celebrate Valentine’s Day outside of school property, so they’re free to send cards via mail, watch sappy romance movies, and have their fast food dinner dates. Of course, I have to ask: if kids get caught with those heart-shaped message candies, will they be in trouble for breaking the Valentine’s Day ban or the candy ban?
