If you’re a single lady on Valentine’s Day, and you’re looking to see what you future partner might be like, why not look to the skies? No, not for UFOs, for birds! There’s an ancient tradition of watching for signs of the future in birds called ornithromancy, and it is believed that the first bird a single woman sees on Valentine’s Day will determine her future love. Unless it’s a woodpecker, because that means she’ll be unmarried forever. So, ladies, be on the lookout for birds and stay away from the forest!
Among the birds to watch for are doves, which signify a happy marriage, goldfinches, which signify a rich husband, and birds of prey, which signify that the future husband will be a businessman. Going by that standard, I guess spotting a vulture means you’ll be marrying a lawyer. For the record, spotting a sparrow like the one pictured means that the future husband is someone who works with the land, like a farmer.
I wish there was a complete list of birds to tie to their ornithromancy predictions. That’d be pretty fascinating, considering that most of the birds mentioned by the Telegraph tie back to money. Is there a bird that means, “Your future husband will be dirt poor,” or is that just implied by one of the other birds that doesn’t mean rich dude?
