Dating from July 1938, it’s often considered one of the rarest and most sought-after comic books in the world. The first appearance of Superman, Action Comics #1, was auctioned off Monday. The comic, one of only 100 known to exist and one of the two highest-graded comics of the few that remain, sold for a staggering $1 million dollars American. That’s two and a half times more than the previous high, another edition of Action Comics #1, which went for $400,000.
To show you how much this comic has appreciated in value, the last time this particular comic was auctioned in 1994? It went for only $150,000. That’s some serious appreciation! If you could have told me I could turn the cost of a relatively normal house in middle America into a million dollars in 15 years, I’d have told you that you were nuts.
Still, as long as there are cosplayers and guys with too much money, there’ll be someone willing to pay a million bucks or more for Action Comics #1. That would’ve been a great investment in 1994, wouldn’t it?
