Want to be part of a world record? Sure, we all do! That’s why you should head up to Cleveland, Ohio, on March 5. If you’re lucky enough to be one of the 20,562 fans crowding into KeyBank Arena, not only will you get to see the best basketball player in the world do his thing, you’ll also get a free Snuggie, a commemorative magnet, and a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records.
The Cleveland Cavaliers and KeyBank are planning on breaking the world record for “largest gathering of people wearing fleece blankets” and Guinness will be there to verify the attempt. So, basically, for the cost of a ticket to a basketball game and parking, you get to set a world record and you get a free Snuggie. I could be down for that; I’d love to own a world record. The Cavs should add to their record by signing the world’s tallest man to a roster spot for the night!
While I don’t get the appeal of the Snuggie in particular, I do see the appeal of staying warm, so I can understand why there’s an audience for this sort of product. What I don’t really get is how the Snuggie became some sort of cultural phenomenon on this level. I mean, it’s a backwards robe! It’s a poncho made of fleece!
