There’s no medium that has been as influential as comic books, and when it comes to comic books done right, you absolutely can’t beat DC Comics. In the comic world, you’re either a Marvel guy or a DC guy. Growing up as a kid in the 80’s, I was Marvel all the way. However, when I go back and read comics as an adult, I tend to gravitate to the darker world of DC and its various imprints. To celebrate 75 years of DC Comics, here’s a great list of 75 DC titles you should own and/or read.
While DC made itself famous with Superman and Batman, its best work contains neither of those superheroes. Some of the work doesn’t contain costumed heroes at all! This collection is incredible, spanning famous names like Alan Moore (Watchmen, V for Vendetta), Frank Miller (Sin City), and Neil Gaiman yet also covering lesser-knowns like Kurt Busiek (Astro City), Warren Ellis (Transmetropolitan), and my favorite, Garth Ennis (Preacher).
I’ve read a lot of the titles covered in this list, and I can honestly say that it contains some of the best writing ever put to paper. Not comic book writing, just flat-out writing. Some of the best art ever inked to paper, too. It’s a great list to print out and take with you on your next trip to the library or book store.
