Located within one of the world’s most diverse areas is the Heart of Borneo. This area of lush rain forest on the world’s third-largest island is one of the most densely packed and least explored areas on the entire planet, and it contains some of the world’s weirdest and wildest rare creatures, the likes of which have never been seen outside of this dense jungle canopy, and which may exist nowhere else in the world. Among the findings were a frog that has no lungs and can change its skin and eye color, a bright orange snake, a rare Sumatran rhino, and, most interesting, a ninja slug.
They call the Ibycus rachelae a ninja slug because it creates a love dart that it stabs into its mates to enhance fertility. The Heart of Borneo project aims to protect some 85,000 acres of pristine rain forest that contains these rare creatures and many other endangered and undiscovered species. The island is jointly administered by Malaysia, Indonesia, and Brunei, all of which are keen to protect the area from development and deforestation.
