It has been one of the biggest scoops of the journalism world. Gizmodo got their hands on a prototype Apple iPhone G4 and religiously dissected it, exposing its planned features and giving the world an exclusive look at one of the most hotly-anticipated items from one of the most secretive companies in the world. And now, if reports are to be believed, perhaps Apple is striking back as police raided the home of Gizmodo blogger Jason Chen, seizing his computers, phone, hard drives, cameras, and pretty much everything not nailed down.
According to sources, the search warrant says that the equipment might have been used to facilitate a felony. In this case, I guess, the theft of the iPhone. Nick Denton, founder of Gawker Media, says that California law protects journalists like Chen from having to turn over their sources of information (in this case, the person that sold Gizmodo the iPhone for $5000). In typical Denton fashion, he said, “Are bloggers journalists? I guess we’ll find out.”
Hopefully, journalism protection laws extend to bloggers, because Chen didn’t do anything wrong. Nobody stole the iPhone from Apple; some guy just lost it in a bar! Possession is 9/10ths of the law, and when Apple asked for the phone back, Gizmodo returned it. No harm, no foul, and no laws broken. This is just Apple being punitive; they’re like the Richard Nixon of computer companies.
