As the old saying goes, familiarity breeds contempt. So does fan unhappiness, if you believe the folks at the Nielsen Company. According to a new rating system developed by Nielsen to pore over website keywords, they’ve developed a formula to figure out a general gauge of fan reaction to teams measuring positive and negative comments on blogs, websites, forums, and everything else online. As it turns out, the most despised team in Major League Baseball is the Cleveland Indians.
You’d think it’d be the New York Yankees, with their 27 championships, or the Boston Red Sox, with their obnoxious and whiny fan base. Or maybe even the Cubs, with their tortured fans and history of losing spectacularly. Boston was second; New York was fourth. Rounding out the top five were the Reds (third) and Astros (tied with the Yankees for fourth). The teams with the most positive fans are the San Francisco Giants and the Oakland Athletics, at least for now.
I’d imagine in a measure of pure hatred, Boston and New York would be the top two, but the Indians are dragged down by their negative fan base. The team isn’t playing particularly well, so they’re not getting entertained at the games and haven’t for a long time. You can’t blame them for turning away from the team in droves.
