Way back in 1953, Hugh Hefner had a brilliant idea. He was going to shoot a photograph set in 3D for his new magazine. Unfortunately, while he could shoot the photos, he couldn’t pay for the glasses to be included, so he went with his second choice, and December 1953’s issue of Playboy featured some woman named Marilyn Monroe. You’ve probably never heard of her. Now, Hefner’s back, and Playboy has announced its first 3D centerfold, 57 years after Hef’s first brainstorm.
Hope Dworaczyk will be the first of the three-dimensional Playmates. She also happens to be the magazine’s 51st Playmate Of The Year, so she’s a good test subject for the idea. To Hef, the idea of 3D and a men’s magazine is a natural fit. “What would people most like to see in 3-D?” asked Playboy founder Hugh Hefner. “Probably a naked lady.”
You know? You can’t argue with that logic. When you boil it down, that’s a statement you absolutely cannot argue with. There’s a reason Hef’s a millionaire! The stunt is aimed at boosting the magazine’s newsstand sales (and publicity level), kind of like the Marge Simpson issue did.
