In a way, I was surprised by the fact that the UK’s Ministry of Defense kept track of UFO sightings. I’m not sure why I am, since the US had its own UFO sighting investigation series, but I was just kind of stunned that they kept the records so long and that they had a dedicated officer just for the purpose. I was saddened when they got rid of the post and destroyed the valuable records, but such is the way of the world. Fortunately, the Royal Navy never went in for such foolishness, declaring, “The RN (Royal Navy), and MoD in general, does not maintain any form of central repository of information purely devoted to sea monsters.”
However, the RN does encourage people to report sightings of marine mammals, which are then forwarded to the UK Hydrographic Office at Taunton, and ship officers may well record those sightings in ship logs. This is just a way for the Royal Navy to avoid answering all those sea-monster-centric Freedom of Information requests that would be a huge pain to answer.
Call it the Hawaii defense.
