Sometimes, you get a story that’s too good to be true. Sometimes, you get a person that’s too good to be true. When you’re dealing with Adam Wheeler, it’s a little bit of both. You see, Adam wanted to go to the best schools, but he didn’t want to pay the tuition for those schools, so he did a bit of resume fudging and has been accused of stealing $45,000 worth of scholarships to Harvard University. Not only did he get $31,000 in financial aid, he also managed to plagiarize and lie his way into winning a research grant, the Winthrop Sargent Prize for English, and the Hoopes Prize for outstanding scholarly work.
Jeez, they should give this guy the Wang Mou prize for dishonesty, while they’re at it!
Middlesex County District Attorney Gerry Leone is pressing 20 serious charges against the 23-year-old Wheeler, including larceny, identity fraud, falsifying an endorsement or approval, and pretending to hold a degree. Wheeler lied and successfully got into Harvard; he was unable to further lie and get into Brown, Yale, McLean Hospital’s internship program, and Bowdoin College in Maine (where he did attend but was thrown out for academic dishonesty).
I guess you have to give him credit for the scope of his dreams (and his ability to lie his butt off); not everyone can say they’re an Ivy Leaguer, but he can. Sure, Adam had to lie to get into the Ivy, but he did it, and surely that’ll count for something once he goes to prison.
