When New York City financed a new billion-dollar stadium in The Meadowlands, New Jersey for the New York Giants and New York Jets, all involved had their eyes on one particular prize. You don’t build a stadium that big or expensive for an AFC or NFC title game, you build it for a Super Bowl. In 2014, Jets owner Woody Johnson and Giants owner John Mara will get their wish as New Jersey will host the first cold weather Super Bowl.
I have to say, as a football fan, this is incredibly exciting to me. When there’s snow and ice on the ground, games just get way more dramatic. It’s not who is faster or who has a better passing attack, it’s about pure guts and determination. You have to WANT to win a cold weather game, and usually, you have to run the ball. It’s what football is all about, and the idea of a Super Bowl game taking place in a blizzard thrills me to no end.
It’s not about the ads or the corporate sponsors or the half-time show then. It’s about the last game of the season, the game that means more than all the others combined. It’s about a grasp at immortality.
