It’s a boon to both the criminal and the criminally poor. They were featured prominently on the show The Sopranos as a great way to make phone calls without attracting too much attention, and they’re beloved by people who either A) don’t like a monthly bill, B) don’t like a long-term contract, or C) like to get what they pay for and not pay for what they don’t need. They’re those anonymous, prepaid cellular phones, and they may be a thing of the past if Congress has its way.
Having a cell phone is like having a big flashing sign that blares your name and business all over town. If the government wants to find you, that gadget in your pocket that you use to text message and play games is a great way to do so. That’s why they’re wanting to remove the anonymous prepaid cell phone from shelves and force you to show some kind of ID to get a mobile phone number.
The government and law enforcement officers want to be able to track you. They won’t remove the prepaid phone so much as just remove the anonymity. No more dodging creditors for you!
