Between the three of them, Marilyn Monroe, John Kennedy, and Robert Kennedy have probably been photographed thousands of times. Two of the most famous politicians in the world, and the most beautiful actress to ever grace the silver screen? They’re the subject of dozens of iconic photos, but they’ve never been seen together until now. An incredibly rare backstage photograph of Marilyn Monroe with the two Kennedy brothers at JFK’s 45th birthday party at Madison Square Garden is up for auction. The snap is the only one of its kind, from the collection of photographer Cecil Stoughton, who rescued the picture from the clutches of an aggressive FBI/CIA search and destroy mission.
“There is no other known photo of Bobby [Kennedy] with Marilyn or JFK with Marilyn, and it’s not because they were never photographed together,” said filmmaker Keya Morgan, who bought an original print of the photo from Stoughton in 2008. “In fact, they were photographed together many times, but the Secret Service and the FBI confiscated every single photograph. The Secret Service came in when he was developing the negatives and basically confiscated all the ones of Jack, Bobby with Marilyn. The only one that survived is the one that was in the dryer.”
Morgan bought 10 autographed prints from Stoughton. Nine of these prints go on sale on Tuesday at the Art & Artifact Gallery in West Hollywood, California. The tenth print was given to Michael Jackson.
