The rumors have been swirling for years now. When USC coach Pete Carroll left for the greener pastures of Seattle, that was the writing on the wall for those who refused to believe that the University of Southern California Trojans were in trouble. Now, not only is Lane Kiffin taking over a troubled program, he’s also taking over a program getting hit with NCAA sanctions for multiple violations related to the recruitment of football star Reggie Bush and basketball star OJ Mayo.
USC had already self-imposed sanctions over the payments made to Mayo by former coach Tim Floyd, including a post-season ban, scholarship limits, and recruiting restrictions. Now they’re getting the same thing from the NCAA over the same violations made by football coach Pete Carroll relating to Reggie Bush: 20 lost scholarships, a 2-year post-season ban, and possible the forfeiture of the team’s two national championships attained during Bush’s time in Los Angeles.
If this had been any other school in any other media market, these steps would’ve already happened. Yahoo Sports dug up news about Reggie Bush’s family getting a rent-free house and other NCAA violations in 2006, but the LA media market is too important to college football and the NCAA purposefully dragged their feet so as to give LA a little more time in the sun. Now there’s a storm rolling in.
