Throughout the classic 1980 comedy The Blues Brothers, titular brothers Joliet Jake and Elwood, two orphaned music-loving ex-cons, proclaim that they are on a mission from God to raise money and save the orphanage in which they grew up. Spurred on by their mission and blessed with luck (or given free access to miracles), they outrun the police, angry country musicians, the Illinois Nazis, and a spurned ex-fiancee to raise money and save the church. The Catholic Church has given The Blues Brothers their seal of approval.
L’Osservatore Romano, the official newspaper of Vatican City, has dubbed the movie a Catholic classic and has recommended that it be added to the must-view list of Catholics everywhere. Just in time, as The Blues Brothers is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year! The Roman Catholic Church is a conundrum to me. They’re against condoms and safe sex, but they’re in favor of green technology and the Vatican believes that there might be life on other planets.
Just when I think I’ve got him all figured out, Pope Benedict does something to throw me off! He must be a fan of John Lee Hooker.
