Twilight smashed box office records yet again this week, thanks to a staggering $30-million-dollar take based on the midnight screenings of The Twilight Saga: Eclipse on Tuesday. It’s been said, many times and many ways, but Twilight is big business. However, have you ever really taken a good look at the psychology behind the dichotomy between Team Edward and Team Jacob, as the Twilight fans tend to break off into? Annalee Newitz’s examination of why Team Jacob always has to lose is fascinating!
Despite having been an English major in another life, I’ve never really taken a good, close look at the Twilight movies from a literary standpoint. I just figured that Team Jacob could never win because Stephenie Meyer had a weird thing for cold, glittery men who taste like Campbell’s Cream of Nicotine soup. However, if you look, there are a lot of interesting things at play beneath the relationships involved, and why Bella must always make the safe choice and return to creepy Edward.
Apparently, you can find all kinds of interesting study-worthy material within the confines of awful writing and a permanently-12 mentality! I pity the generations of Bellas, Jacobs, Edwards, and Renesmees to come.
