Lance Armstrong had high hopes for performing yet another miracle comeback in the Tour de France. Despite the punctured tire that put him behind in Stage Three, he hoped to make up time in the mountainous Stage Eight of the event. Instead, Armstrong finds himself a staggering 11 minutes behind the race leader, Cadel Evans of Australia, and has declared that his run at the podium is officially over after two horrible crashes and being stuck in a group behind a third crash.
“My Tour is over,” Armstrong told AFP. “But I will stay in the race. I will enjoy it, I’ll try and take some pleasure out of it, to support the team. I’m not complaining.”
For Armstrong and Team Radioshack, the focus of the remaining tour is now on fellow American Levi Leipheimer, who rose to eighth place in yesterday’s messy stage; former two-time champion and former teammate of Armstrong on Team Astrana, Alberto Contador, is in third place. You have to give Armstrong credit for gutting out the race even after injuring himself.
