The list of famous South African golfers is pretty short. There’s Bobby Locke, Gary Player, Ernie Els, and now you can add the name Louis Oosthuizen to the list. He’s only the fourth South African to win the British Open, and the first since his idol Els. He battled the famously bad winds and cold at St. Andrews Golf Course in Scotland to take the victory with a final round one-over-par 71.
It’s been one of the weirdest British Opens in recent memory. Rory McIlroy shot a 63 on a perfect summer morning; that next day, the winds had kicked up so badly play had to be suspended for hours. They say it’s better to be lucky than good, but Louis Oosthuizen has been both this weekend. He’s been blessed with great timing, and he’s avoided all but one bunker on the weekend, which is nearly impossible to do on that golf course.
You can’t take anything away from him; this is a great win for him. This has been a huge sports summer for South Africa, hasn’t it? First the World Cup, now this!
