When airport security officials at Houston’s George Bush International Airport looked over Housrou Kedji, the native of Togo was acting suspiciously. He was nervous, sweating, his heart was racing, and his hands were shaking as he gave conflicting stories about the purpose of his trip to Texas. The 42-year-old man was trying to board an Air France flight to Switzerland. Given his general paranoia, it should be no surprise that he was smuggling drugs. Specifically, he had swallowed 85 condoms full of cocaine.
Kedji eventually surrendered 2.2 pounds of pure cocaine to custom’s officials after a couple of shots of liquid laxatives and some fiber tablets, with a little help from a specialized toilet. Kedji, of course, was his own worst enemy, says retired DEA official Mike Vigil. “A lot of these guys may be a first-time courier,” he said. “They are perspiring and do stupid things to bring attention to themselves. You get these guys thinking, ‘I am going to get caught, going to go to the jail,'” he added. “They are at the point where they are shaking.”
Kedji was to be paid 5,000 Euros for the smuggling job, or about $6500 American dollars. Now he’s being held on two charges of drug trafficking. Still, it could have been worse; if one of those condoms full of coke had broken, he’d be dead right now.
