You can call it a victory for the forces of good over animal cruelty. You can call it a deathblow to a time-honored cultural tradition. You can call it a sport banned, a tourist trap sprung, or the first battle in a war guaranteed to rend Spain in two. No matter what you call it, the traditional Spanish sport of bullfighting is on the wane as the Spanish region of Catalonia has banned the sport of bullfighting within its borders.
Catalonia isn’t exactly a hot spot for bull fights anymore, as the capital city of Barcelona only has one bull-fighting ring which has only 4,000 season ticket holders, versus Madrid’s 19,000-strong main bullfighting arena. Still, this is the first time the traditional sport of corrida de toros has been banned on Spanish soil, and it might not be the last. Don’t worry, bull fights are still a big deal in other Spanish-speaking countries.
Cows are for eating (and occasionally sexy-time), not fighting! It’s a waste of delicious steak to make it run around and slowly bleed to death from spearing!
