Ohio is Amish country, and no part of Ohio is more full of Amish than the northern end of Ohio. That’s why when the Cleveland, Ohio, headquarters of the Northern Ohio Red Cross was setting up a blood drive, they had to make a special condition to properly reach out to the Amish community: during the Red Cross’s blood drive, every pint of blood donated allows you to enter to win either a new car or a new horse-drawn buggy!
That’s right, they’re going to give the lucky winner an Amish-style horse-drawn carriage OR a new 2010 Nissan Versa. The Northern Ohio Red Cross contains three of the largest Amish communities in the world, and as such, they didn’t want to leave their bearded brethren out in the cold when it comes to a chance to win. One of the local Red Cross chapters has an Amish member; they reached out to him and he commissioned the building of a special, custom buggy for the contest.
That’s a great idea. It helps the Amish, helps the people of Ohio, and everyone wins. The Amish get to look like the good, kind people that they are, and the English get a glimpse of Amish life.
