Like the old saying goes, “It’s all fun and games until someone gets hurt.” Well, some fun and games involving four men horsing around on a boat was all laughs until a horrible accident left four men dead by drowning. The four men, 57-year-old Darrel Shappart, 26-year-old Jared Hale, 30-year-old Aaron Hale, and 30-year-old Stephan Verbeck, were out on a boat with five minor children when one of them was pushed into the water at the American Falls Reservoir in Power County, Idaho. Turns out he couldn’t swim, and the three others drowned after they jumped in to save him.
The five children on the boat were the ones that phoned 911 for help. None of the four men were wearing life vests, despite the presence of plenty of them on board the craft. Life jackets are required for a reason. It’s also not a great idea to push people off a boat if you don’t know whether or not they can swim.
What a tragedy. What a horrible experience for those poor kids on board. This is just a sad story all around.
